Paralympians head to Manchester for World Cup racing
Friday 22 May 2009

Five Australian Paralympic swimmers will compete in Manchester this Sunday and Monday at the Paralympic World Cup before going on to Berlin for the International German Swimming Championships later next week.

The team of Rick Pendelton, Jeremy Tidy, Ellie Cole, Teigan van Roosmalen and Prue Watt will be coached by Paralympic Head Coach Brendan Keogh, with Swimming Australia Head Coach Alan Thompson also traveling to Manchester to attend the meet.

While only taking a small team to Manchester and then Germany for the racing experience, Keogh says he’s looking forward to seeing how individual form from the Australian Trials stacks up against international opposition.

“We’re looking towards the World Short Course at the end of the year as our major goal, and this is a great opportunity for these guys to get some good racing experience,” said Keogh.

“I want to see some solid racing. We always put in solid performances overseas and I want to see some good improvements from heats to finals.  There are specific goals for each individual swimmer to reach, but the key here is to get some racing experience.”

With all five swimmers showing good form at the Australian Championships in Sydney in March, Keogh is particularly interested in the progression of 22-year-old Victorian Prue Watt, who has already swam a World No 1 time for the 50m freestyle this year.

Prue’s time for the 50 at the trials would have won here a gold medal in Beijing so we’re pretty excited about how she is improving at the moment, and it will be good to see all the athletes race both in Manchester, and in Berlin.”

The Paralympic World Cup also includes athletics, track cycling and wheelchair basketball, with the swimming events to be held on Sunday 24 May and Monday 25 May at the Manchester Aquatic Centre.
